Backstory and Lore tm

Tattoo artist who graduated some shitty college with an arts degree and is doin' his best to make a living. Eventually becomes internet-famous for being good looking, although he had no intention to. Professional, even if he's a dick off hours. Lead vocal and bassist for a band the violinist slash drummer, his childhood friend (and current roommate, and friend with benefits) forced him to join.
Grew up in Shrug Emoji, USA, with Vex Suzuki, his aforementioned childhood friend. Mal is Chinese-American, and they became friends since they were both Asian-American. Went to college at 19, where he was roommates with Vesper Averhart. Graduated at 22 (and got a bike! and started his tattoo parlour up!), and moved into an apartment with Vesper. Picked up Tire Iron the cat when he was around 25, and Vex would unofficially room with them. Technically has a younger sister, but they never really meet (his parents had another kid when he was fifteen, and after they disowned him at eighteen, he never went back).

Appearance and Outfits!

Likes wearing crop tops.
And black jeans. Hell yeah. Bonus if they're high waisted and a li'l faded.
Usually has several relatively simple silver rings on. Takes them off at work and when sleeping.
And biker clothes. He looks so good in kevlar (i am not biased i swear)
Has tattoos - ones on the base of his fingers, of little eight-pointed stars (think pole star). He also has one of an eastern dragon on his left thigh and hip, and a set of six abstract wings along the top half of his back.
Has piercings - two on his right eyebrow, three on each ear (two on the lobes, plus a helix piercing that's usually attached to the others with a thin silver chain).

Has dark hair in a messy wolf cut, and usually keeps it half-tied up (ie. the top part is loosely tied in a bun, and the rest is... left there. see jing yuan from hsr's hairstyle for reference). Always has at least two hairbands (typically black) on his wrist because Tire Iron keeps stealing them to chew on them.
Dyed his hair once because of a dare. What colour? Like he'd tell you, bitch. He re-dyed it a week later with box dye.
Has full lips with a prominent cupid's bow, and he regularly uses chapstick.

Fun facts! :3

Functional but also. A disaster.
Got a bike for his 22nd birthday from Vesper, along with a metric fuckton of safety gear.
Once broke his arm in college because he was holding flowers, two sets of keys, a pile of books, and trying to open that one super heavy door that always swings back on your foot with the force of a thousand hammers. You know the one. Mal was miserable about it because his crush didn't visit him at the hospital OR draw on his cast. Vex drew a dick (and a cool bike with flames on it) and Vesper drew a set of amateurish flowers.
Is the one who picked up Tire Iron, and thus has to take him to the vet. Tire Iron meows so sadly at him he always gets him extra treats later.

Opinions

Vex Suzuki:

Loves Vex a lot. They grew up together, so they initially treated each other almost like siblings, then lovers. Became friends with him because they were one of the few Asian-American kids their age, and Vex was the first person Mal came out to, and vice versa. When Vex said he might be aromantic, Mal took it in stride - he knew Vex still loves him too, even if it's in a different way. Was his first for many things.

Vesper Averhart:

Met Vesper at uni, when he was taking an art major and Vesper a literature one. Thought Vesper was a bit of a pretentious bastard and wondered why the hell he was even in this uni in fuckin' America, but grew to respect his work ethic and genuine love for his work. They fought a lot at first due to culture shock and misunderstandings, but Mal would teach Vesper how to cook and Vesper would help him keep track of homework. They settled into a nice routine, and Vesper would give him awkward advice when he was chasing his crush. Grows to love Vesper's quirks and Vesper-ness.

Tire Iron:

Found The Bouy right outside his tattoo parlour, meowing. It didn't seem to have parents around, even though Mal left it there for a bit with some water and some kibble he hastily went out to buy, so he took it to the vet and called Vesper being all 'please please please'. Loves Tire Iron to bits. For the first month, his search history was full of things like

His parents:

Decent enough at first, if a bit neglectful. Wanted a golden child, so they would make him go to cram school a lot and forbid him from doing anything 'bad', like smoke or swear or have his hair too long. Mal was kind of a goody two shoes as a kid, but then got rebellious and shaved his head, got tattoos, stayed up past curfew. They had another kid when he was fifteen, since they gave up on him. After they found out he was gay, they tried to convince him he was delusional and under someone else's (Vex's) bad influence, and when that didn't work, essentially disowned him. Mal doesn't talk to them anymore. Vex hates them.

Vex's parents:

Treat Mal like their own kid. He calls them Auntie and Uncle, and they used to go to his parent-teacher conferences sometimes when his parents were busy. Frequently invite him over. Were a touch upset when Mal and Vex started dating, but only because they'd been treating them like siblings. Went roughly like this: "Oh no, we can't call you son anymore! ...Hm. If you get married..."
Anyway. They keep pushing (gently) for them to get married.
